We have been remodeling our bathroom this week (preparing to sell our house). I was painting and my husband was installing a light/vent. He went into the attic to do some wiring and woke our resident little brown, who was hibernating up there. The poor little dear was startled and flew out of the attic opening into my sewing room. When we went to round him up, he flew out the bathroom window that was open to let the paint fumes out.
I'm so worried about him. It's very cold and it was broad daylight when he went out. He flew into a tree across the street and it's the last I saw of him. Is it possible that he'll simply come back inside? Surely he knows his way back..he's been up there a long time..maybe even a few years, I think. We never patched up the vent he comes in. He's one little bat, there are no others, so I never saw the harm in letting him stay up there. Plus, it's a crawlspace where no one ever goes.
Since he's been in torpor, I'm worried that he's too weak to get home or that it's too cold and his tiny body will be shocked. I thought about going into the attic tomorrow afternoon to see if he made it back, but I don't want to wake him again! Any thoughts, Joe? Or anyone? ---Betty
