Will a butterfly house work for bats?

Postby camomile » Wed Jun 09, 2010 7:26 pm

My aunt gave me a butterfly house that I never used. I was wondering if it would suffice for a bat house. If I left the door ajar, I mean. It has several slots to get in it too. My hand shows the scale.

I don't think a butterfly house will work for bats, since it does not have any baffles in it to allow them to move around to get the amount of heat/cooling that they need. If baffles were put in it, it would be too small to be practical. You'd be much better off buying or building a small multi-chambered bat house which is designed for the space needed by bats.

We have a couple butterfly houses in our flower beds, and they are mostly for decoration since the butterflies don't really need them. I have seen an occasional butterfly using them, but it is mostly wasps that occupy them.
