White Bat is Back again in 2011

Postby Gary Springer » Sun Jul 17, 2011 9:22 pm

The white bat that occupied my bat houses in summer 2010, a video of which you can see on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj-1RXxq ... ll&list=WL )
did not return this spring.

However, tonight, July 17, 2011, when I was reminiscing about it, out it came!!

Do males mix with females during the raising of young, before they fledge?

I ask because it appeared about the same time last year, after the young bats begin flying.

Great video Gary! Males roost separately while females raise their young.........

Is this a little brown bat?

Since the white bat was not here until after the pups fledged, and because there were two houses full of bats, both bat houses must have been full of only females and young.

Wonder where the males are roosting whle the bat houses are full of bats. It would have been hard not to notice the white bat even if it visited occasionally while the young were being raised.

I've never gotten a positive ID on the bat species. I suspect there are at least two species, evening and little brown. There are now more than 500 bats.

I went on your website, www.realbathouses.com and didn't see any bat houses, now that is funny.
