Can you please direct me to where I would look to purchase a pole long enough to mount my new bat house. Also, is 12ft. too low? I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago. Putting it up now. I know it's late in the season but I'm hoping I can still attract a few this year still.

Square wooden poles can be found at your local building supply, round at a farm / ranch supply (Which may not be as close to you) Galvanized metal poles can be found where commercial grade chain link fence is sold. A few of the vendors listed at BCI offer a mounting bracket for metal poles.

12 feet up to the bottom is fine over a mowed lawn, I would go at least 3 feet higher if it is in a pasture or garden area.

Another place to check is local plumbing contractors. I got a 21 foot 3 1/2 inch galvanized pole that I use for one of my martin houses from a friend who is a contractor. I bought it new but he said he oftern has some when he demos a job sight that I could have for free.
