Where to Mount New Bat Houses?

Postby jogl » Fri Apr 08, 2011 3:16 pm

I finally managed to build 4 new bat houses. They are 4 compartments, about 2 foot square each.

I have two farm barns in my back yard. On one the gable ends face NE and SW and on the other the gables face NW and SE. Which sides of which barns should I mount the new bat houses on?

Thanks,
JP.

Here is a good guide from BCI that may help (see criteria #4): http://www.batcon.org/pdfs/bathouses/ba ... iteria.pdf

If it were me I would place them both on the SE wall, unless you live someplace that is really hot in the summer.

Living in Canada you are going to want to mount them in the direction that will get the most morning sun. That is usually facing south east. However if the south east gable end of the barn is shaded by trees or another structure then you will need to look somewhere else. They will need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight to start the day.

The SE sides of both barns are not shaded and get good morning sun. Sounds like that's where I will place them.

Thanks guys,
JP.
