Where to mount house in deep south

Postby gulfcoastfella » Sat Jun 04, 2011 12:16 pm

Hi,

I live on a lake in southern Mississippi, and want to hang a bat house to keep the mosquitos and gnats at bay. I know I'm supposed to hang the bat house facing to the south, but it's only June 4 and the temperature is already hovering around 100 degrees and it will only get hotter. Should I choose a shaded location, or mount the house facing another direction?

I just posted photos of my bats a few days ago which were already too hot in the Atlanta, GA
metro area. They were so hot they were already hanging out of the bat house during daylight hours. Even the pups were too hot. Actually, it is probably too late in the deep south to attract a maternity colony which would benefit from the heat. I would suggest that you keep it out of the sun, but not near any trees. An ambient temperature in the 90 to 100 degree range like we are getting here does not require any sun exposure. They do benefit from sun here in late March and April, but suffer from about June until Sept. Please let us know where you decide to place the bat house. If possible place several in various locations to allow the bats to choose.
