Too far from the water?

Postby flyin-lowe » Sat Apr 02, 2011 11:02 pm

The friend that helped me wrap the roof on my bat house is very interested in putting one up at his house. He said he didn't think there was water real close but here in rural Indiana there is usually always water close. I looked on google earth and he does have a small stream that runs close to his house. There is a pond (appears to be about an acre) that shows .33 miles from his house and another pound that is .57 miles from his house. I see most sites recommend 1/4 of a mile as the max distance from a water source. Is that a strict figure or should he be fine?
He has a very open yard with about 15 acres outside of town. He is interested in building a large house. He told me that he has 2 telephone poles he could put up on his property. Does anybody have any decent plans he could use. He was thinking about make one 4'x4' or bigger, 5 chambers. I thought it might be a good idea to put two poles up and then build two houses that size and mount them back to back. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I forwarded him a few of the PDF links I found on Batcon's web site. I searched around for a while and couldn't find many decent on line blue prints for building houses.

Your friend appears to have plenty of water close enough to support bats. Also here is a link to a standard bat house that I built. The finished house is about 2 ft wide and 4 ft high and weighs a ton. Your friend can just change the dimensions to 4x4 or what ever he wants. This is a great design that has served me well and has been used every year until now. I relocated it again this year and have no bats in it as yet. Just look at the standard bat house plan, it is a big 7 chamber. I made mine only 5 chambers. BTW, your finished bat house looks great, and good luck.

Two houses mounted back to back on two poles sounds like a good plan to me........with 3/4" crevices you can't go wrong.......
