Thunder from down under (Australia)

Postby AussieBat » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:22 pm

Hi Everyone,
I'm based in Perth, Western Australia. I'm passionate about building bat boxes and constantly constructing different types to see what our local bats like. I run bat box building workshops with the aim to attract families to come and learn about the bats and to build their own boxes.
I've tried the American multi-compartment design here but our locals don't seem to like it. They seem to favour the smaller single compartment type based on the English Stebbings design. These also make excellent kit form boxes for the kids to assemble.
At the moment I'm testing polystyrene boxes, Aluminum aircel insulation wrapped around my standard 18mm plywood type, and a product called "Thermilate" which is a additive that "claims" to insulate paint. Not sure if someone is pulling my leg with this stuff.
Anyhow, I think I know what Tomas Eddison felt like constantly experimenting.
If you want to check out what the Australians are doing go to my web site http://www.gobatty.com.au
Looking forward to learning from you guys...

Hi Terry,
Yes, I've just joined Facebook. Got to find some time to see how it works and get started. I've just purchase a HD video camera and I'll looking at creating Youtube videos (and Facebook) on using the Anabat bat detector out in the field. This is taking up my spare (or what I have) time. Being self-employed you never stop.
My goal is to learn all I can about the bats and ultimately create a suitable home that anyone can make.
cheers
Joe.
