The most agressive plan to attract...

Postby DigsBats » Thu Feb 17, 2011 12:49 pm

Hi folks. I own a 5 acre pond and have a serious mosquito problem. I would like to have a very large bat house built and put on a post in the middle of it. They would be completely safe and well fed there. Are bats ever captured and relocated? If I had some transplanted into a house, would they perhaps stay? There used to be a lot of bats here 10 years ago but they all kind of disappeared and I see very few now on summer evenings. Was there some kind of an epidemic? Where would I find the best condo design for the bats that are in the King Co, WA foothills?
Do you think this is batty?
Would appreciate any help I can get. If successful it could be a wonderful bat viewing site accessable to the public. My pond is on a highway.

Welcome! I have pictures on this website of 2 condos I've helped the PA game commission build. The capacity is 6,000 for a condo of this style. Plans can be seen and downloaded at the PA game commission's website.

I would be hesitant about putting a condo right out in the water though unless it had a platform underneath to catch any downed pups and also for ease of maintenance.

Forget about capturing and relocating any bats..........They always return to their home territory.........

There are a lot of good pictures and ideas on this website for you to browse through.......

Keep us posted on your progress!
