The Bats Are Back!

Postby LarryH » Mon May 30, 2011 1:26 pm

The bats are finally back, just in time to start having their pups. I was very happy this moring to see the bat houses full. I've only had a few of them up until now. This morning when I checked the houses, they were totally full. Or, they may have been hanging near the bottom of the houses due to the heat -- it is 93 and humid today. I was concerned that we weren't going to have bats this year. I have 2 main houses, and both are totally full. I have a smaller house mounted on the barn about 100' away from the main ones, and they tend to use it for a nursery colony. There aren't any in that house so far, though. I'm just happy to have them back!

I'm happy for you Larry and the bats. Mine have pups going on three weeks old now.
I only have about 60 bats down from 200 before all the stormy weather. It is in the 90 range here also with sun. I don't know what happened to the bats, but do know they were with pups.

I did an exit count last evening, and I counted 181. But, I think I missed quite a few when bunches came out all at once. But, the numbers is down a little from last year. We've been seeing steady increases every year since the houses were put up, but this year seems to be a bit of a decline.

I checked the houses around noon today, and there still aren't in what has been used as a nursery colony. There is a lot of fresh guano below the main houses, though.
