Thanks to all who have given me advice on my project. I really had my heart set on using the spruce as my post, but after reading comments from some of you about the possibility of it rotting out, I have decided to install a post I can trust. With my luck the darn spruce would fall on top of somebody and kill them in a few years. So I'm going to put two houses on the spruce this spring, and in the next year or two put up something permanent. I'll try for little browns in one box and big browns in the other. Once the permanent post is up, then I'll take the spruce stump down during the winter.
