Species identification from guano?

Postby William Bagwell » Fri Apr 22, 2011 8:14 pm

Yeah, I did not think so either... But it is a great excuse to post a picture of some bat poop.

Not sure if this is from our lone 'early bird bat' who has been back off and on for weeks, or if our whole colony is back. Got chastised by a bat this morning for being underneath its roost and noticed guano for the first time this year. Have been looking both there and under the new house so this is very encouraging. Almost dusk, time to go watch...

Need a ruler in the pic as a size reference..........there is a big size difference between big brown and little brown bat guano.....

I have a colony of 50 big brown bat mothers at my uncle's place and they darn near fill up a 5 gallon bucket with guano in one summer.....

My bad. Had scanned the guano and my test grooves at the same time so I do have a crude ruler.

Groves and lands are approximately 1/8" and 1/4" wide respectively. Over all is 6 1/8" and center to center will average exactly 3/8"

Counted four bats total yesterday evening and all four are the size I remember from last year. So at least part of my colony is back! Will make another scan with a real ruler included.

I am still not sure.........size wise it appears to be in between big and little brown.......if you take a pic with some guano with a ruler or a dime beside it I could probably tell.........then again it could be a species that we don't have here in PA.......

Joe, that is a nice pic with the pen! Very nice!
Suppose not too many folks other than true wildlife
fans and biologists can appreciate pics like that.

Thanks for sharing!
