Some flying pups

Postby cloudman75 » Wed Jun 23, 2010 11:38 pm

Watching the bats on exit tonight, I saw some shaky small little browns drop low out of the house which I believe were
new flying pups. I think there are around a hundred pups, but have not counted them. The adults at last count were 105.
So far I have not had any pups fall from the two bat houses which they are using. I usually don't have any to fall and 4 chambers are scratched plywood with the back chamber screened. I plan to use only scratched wood from here on when building a bat house. I think all the pups should be flying by this weekend. The weather has been in the mid 90s for several days. No bats are using the unvented house which is a darker color. There are about 25 bats using the three chamber with the rest in the five chamber which is their favorite. It is a home built house, the three chamber is a purchashed OBC and both have been used since the first year they were installed. The obc house has screening with a large hole in the upper front put there by a woodpecker. Both houses were moved to a new location this winter about 30 ft from the previous one. It did not prevent the little browns from using them. Both houses had quite a bat odor so they could relate to them I suppose. The night is thick with all sorts of insects this summer, so they have plenty to eat.
