School me on how long I will see bats in my yard?

Postby Markcuda » Fri Jul 15, 2011 11:09 pm

I live in the center of Illinois, Decatur, Bloomington area.
I am seeing two, some times one bat in my yard and the neighbors yard also.
At what time of the year will I not see them any more?
I have up two houses, but no luck yet.
Scott, geographically, we are pretty close to one another?

Mine leave after first frost which is usually November. Yours may leave sooner as you probably have frost in Oct. Another good clock is when the insects seem to go. I have had bats appear on warm days in winter. Mine, I believe, hibernate within an hour flying time. That also would influence when you seem them and when not depending on where they go. The weather does play a role from my experience. Maybe some closer to you will chime in and give you specific info for your location.

Markuda, I am in NWPA and I see a few little browns around my light pole all the way til the end of October.......

However, my little brown maternity colonies start dispersing the first week of August........by the middle of September they are mostly gone.....

I have observed my big brown maternity colonies roosting together as late as the end of September......

I have seen big browns roosting in my boxes as late as Nov. 28th.

Well, every night, I go out side and look for bats.
I am seeing two flying around my yard as well as my neighbors, so gracefully for a few minutes, then they are gone.
I was just curious as to how long in the fall I would see them.

For me the latest was early October for little browns and mid November for big brown bats.

Mine in La leave when temp is below 40F or so. I don't think they go far as I have seen them back in day or two. There are many hollow oaks in my neighbors yard behind me...She says she hears bats in her yard at night. It occurred to me, one reason I may be doing so well with my houses-are her hollow oak trees. Who knows how many are living in them may be only 75' away?
As far as your situation, took a few years for them to find my house. You should be seeing them now...Mosquito's are already bad in La.So lots of food. If you ever watch "Billy the Exterminator" on A & E-- this is the city I live in .He regularly gets calls, and does shows on eradicating bats from homes and business's. Luckily he just make them relocate. Knows the value of them. Randy..Bossier City, La
