Roof question

Bat Houses Bat House Discussion!

Hey all:

I am building a 2 chamber rocket box per the plans from Bat-Con.  Their plans call for the box to fit around a steel post.  I increased the size so it'll fit around a 4x4.  The two sleeves are complete and next is the roof.  A few more questions:

1) Do you think it'll be worth the effort to only slide the house 1/2 way down and fill the top cavity with sand, or will the post itself serve as a heat sink?

2) The plans call for a flat roof.  I am thinking of a hip roof.  Either way, the roof will have a drip edge and roll roofing glued on.  A flat roof would be easier, but I am afraid of leaks.  Which would you prefer?

btw- I've seen bats in the neighborhood when out walking the dog at dusk, but I was closer to the water source when walking.  I had never looked in my own back yard.  So, I grabbed a beverage and sat and swatted skeeters.  Sure enough, I sighted a few bats.  Little brown, I presume.  I was totally geeked out.  My ever patient and way-cool wife was happy for me, as well.

Rick, I think a sand heat sink is worth the effort. The 4X4 post also does act as a heat sink. I have used pea gravel as a heat sink before.

Definitely go for a hip or gable roof. The main thing is having a slope so it will shed water.
