Rocket Bat House with SAND

Bat Houses Bat House Discussion!

I have just completed 2 rocket bat houses and have incorporated sand into plastic bags, into the centre portion where the 4X4 post goes into, I divided this compartment in half. The mtg. post goes half way up into the rocket house and the top half is filled with sand bags. I also inserted bags of sand into the roof cavity. I am hoping that this will act as a heat sink and keep the house warmer for a longer time, giving off heat slowly. the rest of the house is made of 3/4 inch sheathing grade ply wood. It is painted 3 coats of water base black paint. can't wait to try it out! I used Stainless steel screws and wood glue on the outside to fasten the sides together.

Looking forward to the feedback!  Any chance for some photos?  How many chambers 2-3?  I like the sand in the roof cavity idea.  Sure sounds like a great rocket bat house.

I'm also interested in the success of this rocket house.  I have one of the Maberry "Belfry" Sand Box II houses, and the bats seem to love it.  It was used primarily for the nursery last year, and it has both Big Brown and Little Brown bats in it this year.  It seems that they like the more stable temperature that the sand offers.

HI Larry:

I have not mounted my 2 rocket houses yet . One will be set up on the shores of Lake Winnipeg close to where three spiecies of bats hibernate in limstone caves. I have one rocket hse. in my small urban back yard,mtd.26ft up,in the sun about 10 hrs /day, painted black, but no sand.

Where, and how did you put sand in your house?

I tried putting in a picture but it says it is too large so I will have to figure out how to shrink the size! Unless someone can tell me?

Wee Wally the maximum filesize attachment is i102400 bytes and 600wide X 800 tall for graphics.  I recommend you download IRFANView at http://www.irfanview.com  (freeware without spyware) and resize the image.  I am also working on some webspace for us to upload images to and link to which keeps the forum leaner and faster and is better for growth since the uploaded attachments goto a database and images are space hogs for that.  I'm also offering to post your image in a post for you after you post.  You may email the image to me and I'll upload and edit your post to include it if desired.   Joe

Wee Wally, I have the commercial "Belfry" Sand Box II house that Marvin Maberry builds -- http://www.maberrybat.com/sandbox2.htm

There is a plug in the middle of the external part of the house that I removed, filled a center tube with sand and re-installed the plug.  I used standard playground sand sand.
