Red bats in Indiana?

Postby flyin-lowe » Fri Oct 07, 2011 10:59 pm

A friend of mine was doing some work at a guys house in east central Indiana. He said his customer had a bat house up on the side of his house. There was lots of guano and my friend could see bats inside the house. He showed some interest in the house and asked the owner some questions. The owner told my friend that several times earlier this summer there was what he described as a "large red bat" on the house. I know some people can exaggerate things but the owner said that the bat appeared to be at least twice as large as the little brown bats. He said it was so big it could not go into the bat house and that it would hang on the landing zone of the house. I did a quick google search and saw that there are red bats in the US but I know nothing about them. How is there size compared to little browns? I felt it was more likely that due to the heat of the summer the bat just didn't want to go into the house, I doubted it was too large to go into the bat house but I don't know. Anybody know anything about red bats?

It is rare for a red bat to roost in a bat house, but I'm pretty sure Kent Borcherding has had them in his.......My uncle used to tell of seeing a red bat flying around in my Grandfather's barn years ago.......Most bat rehabbers get red bats in about every year......they are about the same size as a big brown.......if you go on facebook there are a lot of bat rehabbers on there with excellent pictures of red bats.......
