Progress on plastic houses

Postby William Bagwell » Tue Feb 22, 2011 7:02 am

Lots of distractions this past weekend and did not finish the router jig
to cut the bottoms out. Wanting to get at least one house done without
waiting another week I picked the one that I would not want to use a
router on. Had run one test box with a couple of pounds of sand (real
sand) mixed in with the 13 pounds of plastic powder. Goal here is two
fold, test if bats can cling to this roughened surface. (Think they can)
And to eliminate one wooden baffle.

Since the inside of the outer shell has such a rough texture there is no
need for the inner and outer 'rough on only one side' baffles. Replacing
these two with one more double sided baffle.

Image

As you can see it looks like a light weight 5 chamber house. Looks can be
deceiving since the recycled pallet wood I used for this test box is
quite dense. Noticed the box getting heavy as I slid the last few
partition slats in, so I got out the scale and weighed it. 50 pounds!

Image

Will need something to keep the baffles from sliding out while in use. My
first thought was a simple block of wood and a few screws. Will
galvanized be good enough in this application? Or since these will be the
only four screws holding the house together try to source some stainless
steel screws? Stainless bolts are are easy to find but quite expensive.

Looks good William,

50 Lbs, that's pretty heavy. The 4 chamber houses I built came in at 28 lbs..

Wow, those are really nice pictures! I would definitely go with stainless steel screws.......I have seen many times how corrosive bat urine is......

If you have concerns about weight, in a couple weeks I am going to post pictures of an experiment I'm doing using a chain hoist and pole extension to lift a bat house up onto french cleats for quick and easy mounting.......The box I'm going to be mounting will be about 50 - 60 lbs.

Thanks for the input! My main concern with weight is not with me handling this one, but with potential customers having to deal with something too heavy for a single person to carry up a ladder. Shipping costs might be a concern as well. Terry, looking forward to your hoist pictures. If this mold does not send me to the poor house, I have an even bigger one possibly in the works

Decided to use the scrap cut from the bottom instead of the wood block. Think it looks much better. BTW those are stainless screws and I need to pick up four more for the other side. Also found a source for almost affordable SS screws in boxes of 100.

Great photos and house William.
If you get the time, please post a photo of the house in an upright position. I would like to see some more photos showing the roof etc. How many bats will this house provide a good home for?The support for the baffles looks great.

This is another of the stone effect colors called wheat. Not as bold of pattern as the sandstone below and does not have the bottom cut out yet.

'Sand stone' stone effect held against a large real sand stone slab. (Real rock is vertical and I was holding the bat house shell with one hand and the camera with the other.)

No idea about the capacity yet. Each cavity is 3/4" X 15 1/4" X 20" or 228.75 cubic inches total. The black test house above has five cavities for a grand total of 1144 cubic inches (plus a tiny attic space) The others will typically only have four cavities for a 915 cubic inch total.

Thanks for the photos, they are outstanding I think. Also I found a formula that I posted on here that estimated bat capacity for
houses. The formula used 3 cubic inches of cavity space per bat. I thought to be safe I would use 4 cubic inches per bat.
Your house at 1144 cu inches would have a capacity of 286 bats or more. The smaller house 228 or more using the 4 cu inches per bat of cavity space. They are great for most maternity houses needed in this area. I think the formula at 4 cu inches per bat is a
reasonable guesstimate for bats not to be too crowded.

A few more views.

Think your formula is very realistic, wish BCI would adopt a standard for estimating capacity. I may try to reverse engineer the formula used by some of the other builders and see if a pattern emerges. I know many of them are using a more optimistic one
