Pet mesh verses screen

Postby William Bagwell » Sun Jul 24, 2011 5:12 pm

If anyone else has wondered about the difference between retail pet mesh and ordinary plastic screen this picture shows them side by side.

Image

Quite a large difference in the size of the strands and almost no difference in the hole size. Unfortunate for me since I bought it to sift sand  Of course I have been wanting some to experiment with anyway so it will not go to waste

Nothing really. I just thought someone would find the comparison useful. Almost no commercial web site has pictures large enough to actually see what you are getting.

William, are you coherent today?
Your picture only shows one thing, not two different things.

If it has scroll bars, left click the image. If it does not, then right click the image and chose whatever will open it in a new window or tab on your system. Apparently I need to re size it a bit smaller... Done!

http://mysecondbathouse.com/houses/petmesh_and_screen_med.jpg Is the URL to open the original medium size not embedded in this page. And if your clever  and edit the browser string from "http//...screen_med.jpg" to "http//...screen_lrg.jpg" you will get an insanely huge view.

The link you just posted worked great.
I had no idea on how to get the picture bigger on your first suggestion.
I thought screen door screen was a no no to use?

Absolutely! Unless your sifting sand

http://mysecondbathouse.com/houses/sand.jpg Not going to go through all that again  Number 4 is what I am hoping to try on my next batch of prototypes. Sadly I only have one pound of it because the two screens I used were too close to the same size. http://mysecondbathouse.com/houses/sandtextured_plastic.jpg That was done with sand blast sand (#2 in other picture) because it was all I had handy.

This first photo contained both items for me side by each. I have used heavy duty door screening. It comes unmeshed at the bottom over time if you staple it. Glue might work to prevent it. I no longer use it as rough lumber provides a good holding surface for bats. The adults can cling to dressed vertical lumber in an attic like a 2x8 or 2x6 . The bats love pet mesh as one of my houses has that and pups don't fall from that one as a general rule.

I swapped the picture out for a smaller one. Not sure why when other people post extra large pictures they show up with scroll bars. Mine was just cut off, though I could apparently see more of it than you could since I could still see part of the normal screen on the right.

I just cut grooves in the houses that I built. In my limited bit of researching it seemed to me it was a better choice then the mesh. It seemed after a couple years the mesh would go to $h1t. Do most of you use mesh or not? Just a curious newbie.

My two houses were built with nylon mesh
from the factory.
I just hope it holds up, but if they never see bats, they should last a long time

I have not used mesh in about 4 years to build a bat box............I now only use rough sawn one inch boards for baffles..........The bats definitely do like mesh (I was using pet mesh) but a rough sawn surface works just as well and is much less expensive and time consuming than using mesh........
