Offset mounting of multiple boxes

There are 5 boxes mounted on the 30 foot utility pole. The cross arms are offset so the bats can exit out of the top houses without running into the lower boxes.

The lower 4 boxes have back crevice/access slots.

The lowest 2 boxes are mounted onto a surface of vertical rough sawn boards gapped about 5/8" between. There is another horizontal board in back which creates a channel through which the bats can move between these 2 boxes at anytime hidden from view.....

This year, 2011, the middle left box has had the most usage of these 5 boxes.......it is 3 crevices with rough sawn one inch boards. It is covered with black felt paper. I am noticing more and more that both species, little and big browns are preferring boxes covered with felt paper and sometimes aluminum........I think the extra layer provides greater heat retention through the night........

The largest box in the middle left is one of the few pole mounted boxes used by my big brown maternity colony......

Great installation Terry. The bats have a friend supreme in you.

Thanks Erik and Frank! I hope to get some more pictures on here soon! I've got a lot planned for this fall.......

I am still having good luck using rough sawn one inch boards as baffles........This year I did not find a single downed pup under any boxes with rough sawn wood surfaces on the baffles....

Did an exit count on this structure Aug. 23, 2011........had 73 little browns......almost all of them were in the 2 lower boxes on the left.........there is no doubt bats love boxes covered with felt paper, shingles or tin........

Terry,
My store had a new supply of cedar fence boards today so I bought 11 on the spot and hauled them in my little Hyundai elantra. They were 2.25 each which is a good price I think. I use the rough boards for baffles as well as houses. I saw a cardboard mock up of my future bat house my woodworking friend is making for me. It will be fancy I think. Congrats on your little browns. Mine are staying around 61 plus three little black looking bats.

Now that is a setup...Gives lots of ideas of one mount with multiple houses. I may go to something like that and use 1 pole for 2 houses...Randy

Thanks Randy, it has been real successful.........One of my next projects is going to be a mounting system allowing boxes to be raised and taken back down from the ground......Kind of like the french cleat system but also suited for heavier boxes.......

Tonight I counted 18 big browns come out of the large box on the upper left side.......This is the only box on this structure to be used by my big browns.......it is the heaviest with 4 crevices.........Little browns have always used the other 4 boxes but they are not back from hibernation yet........
