New pole mounted bat house....

Postby Erik » Tue Jun 28, 2011 2:46 pm

Hi everyone,

it has been a while since my last post...Too busy with bat work and also little news on the bat house front....
But this is really something I would like to share:
About 1,5 year ago a friend of mine asked me about the possibility of raising a pole mounted bat house in a nature reserve nearby. He is the manager of that nature reserve. He liked the idea of pole mounted bat houses a lot and likes to try something new. (<== putting a bat house on a pole is not very common in the Netherlands, or Europe). I made a simple drawing for him. The bat house I had in mind was central bat "cube" with many chambers, with four other bat houses on the outside of that "cube" and those bat house he should buy at a new bird and bat house company in the Netherlands.
I had almost forgotten about the idea when he surprised me a few weeks ago with the finished bat house and the plan to mount it in the same week. That was just great!
It was terrific to see a simple plan made real by a group of enthusiastic builders and we had a lot of fun while mounting the bat house.
Below are some picture and a link to a video.

Image the bat house.

Image the bat house from below.

Image my lovely wife standing near the bat house.

Image the bat house is placed near a tree line where many bats fly by.

HERE IS A VIDEO OF THE INSTALLATION.
More pictures are in this Flickr-set.

About three weeks after the installation I checked the bat house and it was already used by 1 Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) .

Not the number we are aiming for, but I am very happy with the quick discovery of the bat house by these bats.

Greetings, Erik

I like it!

And I feel your pain about the lone bat, had one or two in one of my new plastic houses. Only stayed about a week and then disappeared before I could get pictures.

That is cool, Erik. Is the pole treated to resist rot? It doesn't look like it to me.

It looks great. May take a year or two for them to really find it...

Hi Dave, I asked the reserve manager, but he hasn't replied yet. But I remember he chose a kind of wood that is very resistant to rot anyway. As soon as I now I will let you know.

When I checked the bat house today there were two Pipistrelle bats inside (picture).

Erik, I have a bunch of poles at various locations that I know someday I will have to reinforce if they start to rot.........I have found that it is quite easy to dig down and lag some treated 2X6's or 2X8's onto the side of a bat house pole or post before it rots and falls over......

wow nice work dude it looks great ,as for pole depth,we set poles everyday and the rule of thumb is 10% of the height of the pole, plus two feet , so a 20' pole would go in 4' 10% of 20' is 2' plus another 2' Thats for poles tied to wire so they can't go anywhere so really the deeper the better, that just gives u somthing to start with

If you watch the video, when the pole is lifted up, it just doesn't look like it went into the ground very far?
The pole looks like a old utility pole, it will last for ever
