Need help to identify this bat.

Postby JR0835 » Mon Feb 06, 2012 4:24 pm

I just remembered that I found a dead bat in my driveway late last year. It was black. The bats in my bat house are much smaller and have light brown fur. This one had been partially eaten by a stray cat, probably. I put a quarter next to it for scale.

Any idea what kind of bat it is? I live in deep south Texas about 15 miles from Mexico.

Nothing but guesses... It looks young to me, and since you say it is bigger than your other bats. And also looks common without any of the big ears of stuff that help identify the less common species. My guess is a juvenile Big Brown.

Did you get a picture of its face?

We don't have big brown bats this far south in Texas. Didn't think to take better photos of him at the time. From it's black color and size (3.5 to 4" long), I think it may be a Brazilian Freetail bat.

They live in central Texas and migrate to Mexico in the late fall. That's when I found him.

Ah, I have heard the expression "cat go your tongue?" But apparently the cat got the tail this time  Ears, tails, face and a bunch of other details are needed for a positive ID. We just need to kidnap us a bat biologist for the forum
