Little Browns in Daylight

Postby cloudman75 » Fri Aug 26, 2011 7:36 pm

Action is kinda slow on the forum so I took photos of my colony on the landing board in daylight at 7:20 PM today. High here today was 98 degrees F.
Very hot and humid. These bats got too hot for the unpainted box. There are about 61 bats in the three chamber cedar box.

Notice two are belly up and look blond while the others are browner looking.

Markcuda, that is the box like you bought, three chamber OBC about 6 or 7 seasons old now.

Incredible pictures Frank! I have had my big browns roost this low in the past, but never my little browns........In recent years since I have added multiple ventilation options my big browns haven't roosted so low........

The dark blue box on the left has three little bats not little browns in it. It gets plenty hot, has an attic and a large wasp nest. Why they stay in all that heat with the wasps, I don't know, but they have been there all summer off and on. I have a cool, very large ,super ventilated unpainted three chamber box a few feet from the hot bats. It has one little bat using it since april, but no little browns. I have had a big brown visit now and then but it comes and goes.

Great pix Frank. It has been in the middle 100's here in NW La for weeks. I was able to finally look and my bats have moved to the larger/cooler house. Still have 150+

Good for you. I only have 61 total. It was cool tonight, and a few moved into warmer boxes with less ventilation. Heading to my Navy ship reunion in the AM up to Branson, Mo. I hope the bats are here when I return. We have had some crazy weather this year. Propagation on the hf bands is good. Bat activity here has been very slow.
