Some of you may not have had the opportunity to observe bats having pups so I'll pass along some info that may interest you about little browns.
I have observed that most of the mothers take their pups with them to feed at least for a few days. I noticed tonight that the bats were making a very long drop out of the box. Shining a light up after they left only revealed 3 or 4 pups left in the box. That means most were flying attached to their mothers.
The long drop was due to the added weight of the pups attached and the need to get up some speed to fly. So far I have seen 4 dead pups on the ground and all looked newborn very tiny relatively speaking. It is amazing to me how large pups are when born with respect to their mother's size. I also had about ten bats in another house tonight which I believe were mothers with pups looking to escape the crowd..I hope more make that choice tonight since it is warm and they don't need to gang up for heat. I always look forward to this time of the year and the bats are right on schedule having pups despite the crazy violent weather we have had this year in my area. I'll be anxious to read about others with pups, etc. My freetail bats have gone, none here now which is unusual. The changes I made in bat houses and locations may have been unsuitable for them. Time will tell now that it is getting hot weather again.
