Leading a Bat Walk

Postby Dave Miller » Tue Aug 10, 2010 12:52 pm

Has anyone here led a bat walk? I helped lead one last night at the wildlife refuge, the first one I've ever been on. It was a lot of fun and we had a big turnout (all 30 slots filled, with 20 more on the waiting list). I brought my bat detector and we were fortunate to see/hear both big browns and little browns (I assume). The big brown calls were quite a bit different than the little browns. We also heard and saw owls and a number of other creatures.

If you have led one, did you use a script? If so can you send it to me or post it here?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,
I've done a "Bats at night" program the last 2 years. I did not use a script. We just did an exit count and I talked a little bit beforehand about bats and bat house design........

Last year we did it on a night with a full moon hoping to see bats fly across the moon...........Unfortunately the moon was not high enough in the sky....... We had a good turnout as well.........
