Las Vegas Bat House success?

Postby BatBus » Thu May 13, 2010 1:44 pm

I know I have bats in the area as I see them frequently.

I am building 2, 3-chamber bat houses from the plans in the Bat House Handbook. I am curious if anyone in the Las Vegas area has had success and can share tips for placement/mounting. Naturally I will paint the house a light color (white), mount and high as practical, away from obstructions, etc however, I am concerned about the very high temps.

Anyone had success in other very hot and dry places, for example PHX, TUC, or similar?

Welcome to the board!

I'm nowhere near Las Vegas, but we have spent a lot of time RVing in Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico. Almost everywhere we stayed, we saw bats. One of the most interesting places for bat viewing is Phoenix, Arizona, at 40th Street & Camelback Road. If you're ever in Phoenix, don't miss watching the emergence of thousands of Mexican Free-Tailed bats there every evening. If you go to the Arizona Game & Fish Dept web page (http://www.azgfd.gov/), and enter the word bats in their search field, you'll find lots of information on bats in the desert.

Best of luck with your bat houses!

Have you had any success ? I am also building a house. We are on the east side of the las Vegas valley.
Any advice about high summer temps would be appreciated.

Attracting bats is mostly about habitat..........If I were you I would read at much as I can about species in your area that may use bat houses.............find out their temperature requirements, where they like to feed etc.

Here in NWPA, the little browns like bottom lands especially if there is a trout stream running through........our big browns seem to like a higher elevation.........that info is probably irrelevant to you if you don't that those species but it's the kind of info I would look for to attract certain species of bats.........

Interesting.... Now I know why we have the little brown bats and not the big browns!
