Interviews for magazine article on bat houses

Postby doreencubie » Mon Mar 07, 2011 4:18 pm

I am a freelance writer working on an article on bats and bat houses for National Wildlife magazine. I would like to talk to a couple of people who have had success with bat houses, especially with little brown and big brown bats. I'm especially interested in talking to people who also have certified their backyard wildlife habitat with the National Wildlife Federation. Thanks very much.

I have had lots of success with both species.......I have a maternity colony of both right here at my home.......I have many pictures posted on this site describing the different bat houses I have mounted here in NWPA

I am familiar with the back yard habitat certification program but have never pursued it.......I mainly just experiment with different bat house designs.......

I've had limited success with my backyard bat house and growing success with my two bat houses on a nearby wildlife refuge (see this thread: bat-house-with-slate-exterior-t479.html).

I am located in the Pacific Northwest, and bat roosting behavior seems to be a bit different than in other parts of the country. e.g. the colonies seem to be smaller and more dispersed.

This summer I'll be leading a few "bat walks" on the refuge this summer, with my bat detector. We did our first one last summer and it was very popular.

I've posted lots of photos to the thread above, take a look.

I had over 121 little brown and some big browns come out last year in May. Had pups also. I have 7 big browns in their now. Just added some guanno under house and on top to see if it worked like last year. I am located in NW La near Bossier City.
You can see 58 coming out last May on a You Tube video I put up..."Bats in Haughton,La #3"...#2 was same night.
May have had a few more in their but too dark to see-My bat receiver hears them up in the house before they come out. Randy
