Don't have an exact answer. Will suggest that if you already have the bat house to go ahead and hang it up outdoors so it will start to weather and age. Then once you get your pole (or mount location) ready even if it is last minute so to speak the house will have already lost all the odors of manufacturing.

I have one hanging on my barn at eye level for just this reason. Plan to hang it and one more yet to be completed bat house on our 'people' house before spring. Be interesting to see which one gets used first...

I put up three new houses last year as soon as the bats left for winter hibernation. I can attest to what William said, go ahead and put them up and let them weather so the new smell gets reduced or eliminated. Bottom line, get them up before scouts come around this spring looking for a new home in Wis.

I agree -put it up now! I have bats migrating in and out of my houses according to temp. It below 40 they either don't come out or leave. Showed back up last week with 150+ leaving at 5:30pm . I am in La and it does get cold down here. Have been in 40's and 30's. Get it up to 17' at bottom and let it air out...Randy Haugton,La
