Install bat house above an A/C unit ???

Postby JR0835 » Sat Jan 07, 2012 11:01 pm

I want to install a new 9-chamber bat house high up on the south side of my house in the gable, about 15' off the ground. My problem is there is a very large A/C unit below this location. Will the noise and upward air draft from the A/C unit keep the bats away? Anyone with this experience? Thanks in advance for your advice and help. Jack

How high above the A/C unit with the bottom of the bat house be? I doubt if the noise will bother bats.......the draft probably will not be a factor if it is far enough below.......

From the top of the heat pump to the landing area on the bat box is only ten feet. The bathouse is 28" wide x 40" tall and will be installed about 18' off the ground.

That house wall is not 18 feet tall, how can the bat house be at 18 feet.?
Are you now going to go up over the roof line?

Do not mount it over the AC if you want bats is my advice. I have a very similar situation here which prohibits me from using a chimney 20 ft high.
The noise and air will be a less than desirable location. My fan blows straight up from the unit after it takes air into the sides for the condenser in summer
You could check yours to see how much air by putting a plastic bag or paper on a pole at the level where the entrance to your house would be.
Mine puts quite a breeze and it is a heat pump running winter and summer. Just my opinion, not a fact that the bats would be reluctant to use the house.
My unit is also not quiet. My advice would be to put your house on a pole away from any trees so as to give the bats a clear fight path.
Also would you explain about the nursery provisions in your bat house on the forum?
