All:
I've had a rocket box up in my backyard in the NW suburbs of Chicago. I've seen the odd bat flying in my backyard, but I have not had long term residents in my bathouse. So, I will soon be bringing the bathouse down and I will be moving it to my 60 acre hunting property in SW Michigan.
This property has got swamps and water all around, so I hope that it will do better attracting residents.
I am in the process of doing some improvements on the wooded portion of my property and I have found that, about a quarter of a mile away, there has been research on endangered Indiana Bats: capture and tagging. These bats have been found roosting in dead elm trees on the state land which is just a quarter of a mile away.
So, here is the question: Will putting up the bat house help the Indianas? Or will it invite in large numbers of other bats who will be competing for resources, essentially harming the habitat?
Thanks
Rick
