I am preparing for bat exclusion at my house in central NC later this summer and want to install (along with my neighbors) some bat houses. So last night we watched the main entrance to the attic and counted over 200 bats exiting that hole. My question is: When bats leave the attic in the evening, are they out for the night or do they come and go? I was guessing from what I saw up there that there were 50 or maybe 100 max. but if they don't come and go throughout the evening, there would be many more than 200! Second question: Where can I buy a larger bat house to accommodate that many bats without spending several hundred bucks? or am I better off with several smaller ones? Thanks! Karl

Does anyone have input on aromatic wood being bad or bat attractant treatments being good?

I am planning on mounting these houses asap, then beginning work on closing up miscellaneous holes around the house in July. I was going to leave their main entrances open through the end of August, then install bat cones to allow them to exit through September. Does this sound like a good plan? Will they occupy the new houses this late in the summer, or would they likely leave as I start closing them out? I know they're unpredictable, just looking for general opinions. Thanks very much!

If have built a couple of houses as of late and if you shop around they can be done pretty cheap. The last one I built I had a local saw mill give me some scrap wood so all I had to buy was a sheet of plywood for the baffles. Also so you know I built a house that was 24"x24" three chambers. I was told on here that it could house up to 200 bats so that might give you an ideas as to what size you need. I also built a 50"x50" 5 chamber house and was told it could hold 2000 bats!

With that many I would go first for a large box.........I've heard both ways about aromatic wood......I have no experience using it for bat boxes so I can't really give any input......

Sounds like you have a good plan.........I should add, the more boxes you put up the quicker you will get bats using them.........the pups especially will readily try every box as soon as they start to fly.......
