How is drought affecting populations?

Postby Emersombiguns » Sun Jul 10, 2011 12:58 pm

In NW La is is 100F during day. I have managed to keep 170 or so in my house. I finally have around 7 or 8 in the new house that was put up before last summer. It is only 5 inches away from the one with the 170. It is also taller! So they are funny creatures, and I see it takes time. Yesterday, I helped a friend at work who lives on local lake cut wood to build their first 5 chamber house. Wood cost was less than $20 at Home Depot. Basically, a 2' by 2' house. My last 2 houses have 3" holes cut in baffles to let the bats migrate between chambers internally. Anyone else doing that? -Oh, by the way-I couldn't stand it---I had to cut another set of boards to build myself or a friend a 5 chamber house!!! Now where to put the 3rd one!!!! Randy Haughton, La

Not sure how the drought affects the bats. I can tell you that the last house I built (5 chamber 50"x50") i drilled two holes in each baffle to allow the bats to move from chamber to chamber. My first house I ever built I left room in the "attic" between the tops of the baffles and the roof. My holes in the big house were nowhere near three inches though.

Randy, yes I have done that.......about an inch and a half hole.........however, most of the time I just cut a notch in the side of each baffle about a third up from the bottom........Bats definitely do love boxes where they can move internally from crevice to crevice.........
