It has been enjoyable and a learning experience

Postby kent borcherding » Sun Jun 19, 2011 2:11 pm

I have had bat houses for many years = presently 110 houses. Lots of bats.

I am going to have some people take over 35 of the houses. My brother and afriend will monitor the 75 houses .

The reason for change in Feb. of 2011 I was diagnosed with Burkett lymphoma - a form of cancer that attacks bone marrow and red blood cells.

Last fall repalced number of houses = houses are constructed of 2" x 8" doug fir . some of the houses are 8 ft. long - some 10 ft. long. height is 24 inches, width is 10 - 12 inches. 6 - 8 baffles. houses will hold 1,000 - 2,000 bats .

Baffles are repaceble by dropping them out of the houses. with 2" doug fir exterior of the houses should last 40 - 50 years.

Kent. Godspeed to you! Forum members that don't know Kent, his contributions to bats and their plight are unsurpassed in my opinion. His experience, knowledge and contributions to the bat-world and this forum are appreciated. Kent, it is so great to hear from you and I wish you all the best in battling this illness.

Take care,

Hi Kent,

I am very sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I wish you well as you combat this disease.

Thank you for all you have done to increase the knowledge of bat roost preferences. My bat houses incorporate some of the insights from your "Oregon Wedge" design.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Kent, you have been a great contributor to this website and to BCI. Stay strong, and fight like nothing else matters. You will be in my thoughts dear bat brother.

hello all ,

Update -- Received aggressive chemo treatments at UW Hospitals in Madison , Wi.

5 cycles - 4 were 96 hr. drip chemos - hooked to IV chemo line 24/7 monday thru friday.

Was 4 months at hospital , 2months in a nursing home for phys. therapy.

The hospital did a PET scan end of July and I am now in complete remission , another PET scan is scheduled for Sept. 30.

The chemo was very aggresive - when I arrived at hospital cancer was stage 4 , the doctors prognosis I would pass away in 2- 4 weeks.

Great doctors can do miracles , and a lot of fight and support I beat the odds.

The aggresive chemo in my spinal cord damaged the nerves in my legs - require a walker or wheel chair now.

I am still in the process of liquidating most all of my bat materials - Bat magazines , bat photos , bat slides , bat books , have the Bat Research News back to first issue in 1981 .

Have sold my saw and some of the tools I used in building bat houses.

I live in Hazel Green , Wi. near Dubuque , Iowa and Galena , IL.
