Georgia Bats

Postby mhutter5068 » Thu Jul 21, 2011 3:52 pm

As stated in another post, I live in Douglasville, Ga. What are the patterns of the bats here. In other words, when do they leave to hybernate? Do some stay in the area year round? When do they start showing up again? When do they have their pups? How long before the pups fly? When is the best time of year to do any maintenance on the bat house?
So many Questions

They leave after the first frost and cold weather usually around Nov. I have one or two of a small un-identified species that stay , but the Little Browns hibernate. Their first pups are in May or early June depending on the weather. A late spring seems to delay the pups a couple of weeks. The pups fly about 5 to 6 weeks after they are born also depending on the weather. Warm weeks seem to let them grow faster and fly quicker. The best time to do maintenance is after the bats have left in winter for hibernation. If you read Bat house Discussion under my old posts I wrote about bats arriving and first pups, etc. for some previous years.
