First Pups of the year

Postby cloudman75 » Fri May 21, 2010 9:32 pm

I shined a light into my 5 chamber house tonight and saw two small pups crawling around.
These I believe are little browns, as I saw no adult freetails. It was 9PM so most had departed from the bat house. I marked the event on a calendar as always.
Anyone else have any yet?

Sorry, I'm not sure if I'm on the right thread. I just discovered we have bats living under the eave. I happened upon this when I saw a dead bat on the ground and some droppings too. I kept watch around 6 pm and was surprised to see around 30 bats flying out from such a small space. One time, I was surprised to see 2 bats return to the roost just a few minutes after they came out. Could this mean they are taking care of their young? Could the dead bat have been a puppy? I am interested in caring for the bats but don'y know how to go about it. I'm worried about seeing dead bats as this means something is wrong. Can I please have some help on this?

Welcome to the forum.
Seeing a bat return to the roost happens quite often with no pups involved. If the bat you saw was very small, hairless and not able to fly at this time it could be a pup. If it had hair and looked about the size of the others, it was most likely not a pup at this time of the year.
A very good way to help the bats is to buy or build a three chamber or larger bat house and they might move into it this year. Make sure you install it in the right location at the right height near where the bats are now. If the bats find a hole into your eaves, they can get into the attic. A three chamber bat house can be bought for around 55 dollars. If you have any questions just post them on the forum and you will most likely get some good answers from all the batters.
Please keep us posted on your bats, and good luck.
