First Big Brown of 2011

Postby cloudman75 » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:16 pm

After the little browns flew out tonight, I took a photo of the bat house and was surprised by a large bat. I think it is a Big Brown as it is much larger than the little browns. This is the first one I have seen this year. The weather has been cooler than normal this week with a lot of rain.

That is a real nice picture Frank! I found a dead big brown a couple nights ago......not sure what happened to it......it had an abrasion on it's arm........we are having extremely cold weather here so maybe they are weak after hibernation and lack of food.........

That's bad news about a dead BB Terry. We have experienced some terrible weather here this week, cold and stormy. These bats had a couple of weeks of food a plenty so they should be in pretty good shape. I have seen no insects this week. Thanks for comment on my freetail photos. It does let one see what they look like. I think I have two more Big Browns in my big new super ventilated cedar house. I shined a light up tonight and saw two dark large bats. Did not get a good clear look as they were way up high. The weather is supposed to warm up next week so maybe I will have some more photos to post. I think the freetails left judging from the smaller guano pile under their favorite house. They will fly back once the weather gets warm again.

Good news on your increased number. I think I have lost about half of my bats due to the winter like weather last week. It is warming this week so maybe they will return as they usually do in this situation. Many are not even flying out at dusk, but hanging around the house, pun.
