Divider spacing question?

Postby smally » Thu Oct 29, 2009 11:02 pm

Hi all, just joined the board & wanted to ask a question or three of you all. My Mother has wanted a Bathouse for some time now & I decided I will build her one for her birthday coming up @ the end of November. I went & bought a few materials based on the first plans I saw and now I've read a little more and would like to modify those plans a bit. The plans I looked at were just a single chamber house. With the materials I have I think I can do a multiple chamber box.

I have plenty of tools & plenty of woodworking ability, but what I don't have is a knowledge of bats. I plan on making a simple box house with cedar 2x4's for sides and cedar 1x8 planks for the front & back. So I'm wondering if i build it w/ the 2x4's for sides that will give me 3 1/2" of space. I'm wondering how many chambers should I divide this up into? I could put 1x8's in as dividers and make 2 equal chambers of 1-3/8" (1-3/8 + 3/4 + 1-3/8= 3-1/2). Or I could split my 1x8's in half (thickness-wise) and use dividers that are 5/16" thick to make 3 chambers. If I do 3 chambers w/ 5/16" dividers it could be 3/4" 3/4" & 1-3/8" (3/4 + 5/16 + 3/4 + 5/16 + 1-3/8 = 3-1/2).

Or there could be other configurations, I guess that's what I'm looking for. I would like to hear your opinions on how the chambers should be divided. I have seen some houses that have all 3/4" chambers. Others that have 3/4 & 1-1/2 chambers. If I should use small & large dividers then should there be more small spaces or more large?? So please let me know what you think, and also how much space should there be left between the top of the dividers & the roof?

One last thing. This bathouse is for the Mountains of North Carolina just in case that matters on how big the chambers should be.

thanks in advance for the help. I can't wait to get this thing built :)

3/4" chambers are the benchmark. Big brown bats like 7/8" but will utilize 3/4". The larger the space the more paper wasp nests you will receive. Have you considered using 2x6 lumber for the sides? Where do you intend to mount this on a post or building? 2x4 houses and single chambered bat houses have less thermal mass and do not work as well on poles and are better suited to building/home mounting. 2x6 and greater depth sided houses offer more thermal mass and will work on posts and poles and you can also make two bat houses and mount them back to back. Provide feedback and we will help further.

I have already spent $40 on materials and I would like to not buy more. I have (2) - 1" x 8" x 8' [actual measurements .75" x 7.25" x 8 feet long, one rough side]. And I have (1) - 2" x 4" x 8' [actual measurements 1.5" x 3.5" x 8 feet long]. So I intend to use the 2x4 for the sides & the 1x8's for the front, back, roof and dividers. If I make a 3 chamber house I think I will split the 1x8's on my tablesaw so I don't need to buy more material or make the house much smaller, so w/ a 1/8" blade curf on my table saw that will make the 3/4" thick 1x8's into 2 5/16" inch pieces.

As for the placement of the house I have talked to my Mother about this (The same mother that wanted a bathouse so much), and I told her it should be places on south or southeast face as I have read. Well, that's the front side of her house and while there is a place I could put it there, she isn't thrilled about it & once she says no once, she can be very stubborn. I really don't think I will be able to talk her into putting it on the front of her house. She wants to put it on the West side of the house, near the peak of the roof where it will really only get a few hours of direct sunlight each day. The overhang of the roof will shadow it until late afternoon & then in the evening there are tall trees in the west that will block the sun. I would guess maybe 3 hours of direct light. Perhaps if someone were to tell me there was no prayer of bats making a home there I could try again to talk her into putting it on the south side. But I think it may take a year or so of the house hanging up there unoccupied to convince her it needs to go on the south.

Anyway, that being said, we do live in North Carolina, so we're kinda in the south. Could it maybe be warm enough here that they don't need it to be on the south side of the house? Also, I know we have bats around here, I have seen lots of them. I even rescued a very cute & friendly bat out of one of her trash cans once. But I don't know if they are large or small brown bats (are big & small brown bats different species or are big brown bats the same as a small one just fatter?).

The first plans I saw were for a single chamber bathouse that had a space 1.5" wide. Although maybe this was for another type of bat in a different part of the country. Right now I am thinking about doing 3 chambers @ 3/4" 3/4" and 1-3/8". Is the 1-3/8" chamber too big for bats in my area? If it is, I could always rip the 2x4's down so that I could make 3 chambers all 3/4" size, or 2 chambers 3/4" and 1 chamber 7/8".

I know this is a long post & I have alot of questions, sorry. All help is very much appreciated. I have a nephew that is recovering from a hip & knee surgery and he's not been getting out of the house much & been getting a 'lil stir crazy. So I have invited him to come over & build this batbox with me on Sunday. So we'll be building on Sunday, so i hope i can have some answers by then. All advice is appreciated :)

thx, gus

Hello,
I sent you a private email and asked what state you lived in not realizing that you indicated N.C. in your post.
Where in the mountains? Asheville, Sparta area near VA, or could you be more specific. Read my email as I did say what I did in NW GA. I personally think the spacings you mentioned are fine for N.C. bats. There are big browns, little browns and several others you may have in N.C. very similar to what we have in N.W. GA. I am just a novice compared to some on the forum. I prefer mounting on poles, in lieu of houses. Storage buildings are OK if high enough. I like about 20 ft height
because of the varmints here.

I live near Asheville, NC. Thx for the response. I guess that helps me settle the spacing thing. But what do you think about mounting on the west side of the house where it only gets a few hours of direct sun, and that being in the evening. How important is it that it be on the south, or gets morning sun to warm it up quickly. Do I need to strongly protest her desire to put it on the west side of the house?

The southern exposure to the sun or east would be ideal in my opinion to attract a maternity colony if you were to mount it on a building. On a pole it doesn't matter that much if the pole has a clear path to the sun. A pole does not block the sun like a building does and the bat house would get sun all day no matter which way it faced, but on a different side of the house.
Also my bats liked an east exposure and roosted in my attic louver until I built a bat house and covered the louver with plastic to exclude them. They raised young on the wire hardware cloth of the louver shaded by the roof overhang. However they were exposed to the attic heat. They appear to seek warm places when they arrive to have pups in the spring. Later in summer, the ambient temperature may satisfy the bats with little sun exposure. They do need heat for the pups when they are born and very young as they are bare for a time. Make sure that the guano will not bother you as there will be droppings under the house. Good luck and keep us posted. Welcome to the forum.

Still wondering about whether or not I should argue about trying to put it on the south face of the house. Will it likely work even if on the west side & not a big deal, or it it prolly a big waste of time to hang it up on the west side & I shouldn't bother unless I can put it on the south face? One more question.... how much space should there be @ the top of the dividers for the bats to crawl over from chamber to chamber?

Time for planning is running out, I will be starting the build tomorrow w/ my nephew. Thanks for your help & if anyway can answer these last couple questions I would be very appreciative. And thanks to those that have helped me so much already.

Forum Gals and Guys, help Gus out with some info.
Gus,
I am not going to tell you to argue with your Mom. I don't believe in mounting bat houses on my house, because my wife told me so.LOL. I use poles in the yard with a clear path to the sun. I have three houses none face south but the back on one is south so it stays warm.
Since I have no experience with mounting bat houses on the west side shaded by trees in the mountains I am not going to go there. I will say that in my opinion it would reduce your chances of success. Can't say for sure but that is my gut feeling.
I based my houses on a plan from the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The plan called for 1/2 to 1 inch at the top of baffles
to the top of the house. Here is a link. The house has been very much used by several species of bats, no wasp problems.

What size are you planning to make your house as that is very important in my opinion. It would be interesting to see your
planning for dimensions. Send me a personal email if I can assist you with my opinions based on my experience here in Georgia.

You can try the west side and if bats do not use it at all the first season after mounting then your odds go down dramatically that it is not to their liking at that location or it did not meet their temperature needs. It is all about experimenting but if you have no plans to pole or post mount and must mount it on the west then give it a try but don't paint it black. A medium brown or equivalent shade should be fine. As Frank mentioned 1/2 inch to 1 inch between inner roof top and baffles is sufficient for bats to relocate to different chambers as desired. Good luck
