Distinquishing Big Brown Bats from Little Brown Bats

Postby Joe Spencer » Sat Aug 27, 2011 8:07 pm

Although the following link is mostly helpful for newcomers to bats and bat houses it can also assist others who have had bats for years but have miss identified them or never attempted to do so. A big brown adults' larger size, nose, darker facial mask, larger guano as well as occasional color variance helps too among other factors such as ears. Little brown bats (often referred to as mouse-eared bats) are much smaller in size and weight. During this horrible WNS affliction/time it is especially important to help identify species correctly so we can better serve bats. Hopefully this will help many that are interested in distinguishing them: http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/librar ... eBrown.pdf

Excellent link Joe! I always use the darker facial mask and larger size of the big browns to distinguish them, but the copperish, long, and silky appearance of a big brown is also a great indicator of species.
