Disabling signature feature to counter spammers

Postby Joe Spencer » Sat Jul 09, 2011 1:04 am

Despite my numerous spamming counter measures the devils are still registering with website links in their post signatures. Since virtually none of us use signatures I will soon be disabling this function. Hopefully this will deter a few of them. All of them are coming from I.P.'s from poor foreign countries Philippines etc. paid by American and wealthier countries which aren't prosecuted since the spam originates/executes in a foreign country. Thanks all...

I have no problem with this since mine is mostly just an amusement to me.

One thing I have noticed with the signature spammers is that often they post during the night with out a signature and it gets added later in the day. Wonder if there are two different people logging into the new account? Someone gets paid a few cents to get the messages up, then someone else adds the payload hours later. If two different IP's are involved perhaps the one that is not in a poor country is the one who hired them. Just some early morning ramblings I will probably regret once I get woke up...

Joe, are you talking about the person that registered the other day, and he had a link in his signature about leasing houses in Ohio?

Well Markcuda that was indeed one of them. Any post or registration here which has links to anything other than bats wildlife or tech info which helps the sight or members is deemed as likely spam.

It involves some time and coding. I'll do my best when I have the time. For now not spending so much time on spammers is a welcomed reprieve.

Now enabled after another spam coding effort. If you use the signature please let me know if you have any errors.

When I go into user control panel, I don't see any place for a signature?

Correction: Both mine and Mark's signature is back in old posts, neither of ours is showing in new posts.

Most interesting. My signature is back in forum posts, but Mark's is not. Though you can still see it if you click on his profile. His contains links and mine does not. Hmm... I too can not find a way to edit what I had previously set up. Not a big deal in either case since keeping the spammers out is far more important.
