Curious Bats?

Postby klarson77 » Wed May 19, 2010 9:27 pm

Hi all -
I have (at least) 2 small black or brown bats in my yard. I live in Memphis, TN. I don't mind that they are here and am happy to read that they eat mosquitos and other bugs..BUT, every time I go outside in the backyard at dusk or after dark the bats circle me, squeak loudly, and come VERY close to me (within a few feet above my head or in front of my face). Is this normal behavior? Should I be afraid? I can't help but be scared when they come that close - I usually end up running back inside the house as quick as possible. LOL
Thanks for any advice! I would like to be able to enjoy my backyard again without being afraid of these little creatures!

If you have a small backyard, it is likely that you are just walking into their "feeding space". They can maneuver extremely well and it is very, very unlikely that they will crash into you. I was in a swimming pool once and a bat came down to drink from the pool (they only drink while in flight). It flew just a few inches from my face but it was only interested in the water, not me. It was actually really neat to see it flying that close.

If you have a large backyard, perhaps they are after insects that may be attracted to you?

There is no need to be afraid. Keep in mind that they eat a LOT of insects, hundreds and hundreds per bat each night. If it weren't for the bats, those insects (or their larvae) would be chewing on you and your plants.

The only reason to be cautious is if you find a bat on the ground. If it is on the ground, it is likely sick or injured. If it is sick and you pick it up with bare hands, it will bite you and possibly make you sick.

Thanks so much for your reply. I went to our local wildlife center and talked to a guy there, too - he said the same thing you did. We have a large backyard and he believes the bats are trying to get the insects stirred up so they can eat. I'm glad that's all it is - and very happy to know they won't attack me! Although, I have to say - I am still a bit scare when they come diving down at me from the sky! I panic and run, and (unintentionally) cause bugs to fly around....which the bats like. I think they are laughing at me the whole time! LOL
Thanks again!!
