Browns are Back Home

Postby Prince Lev » Wed Aug 17, 2011 4:16 am

We returned home from Florida this past week, and I was surprised to find that I had some Big Browns already back for the summer. I couldn't see them in the house, so they must be high up. But the only droppings I saw on the ground were from Big Browns. This morning I checked the nursery house, and found 3 Little Browns in there.

I'm glad to see they're back. The Purple Martins haven't retuned yet, though.

Glad they returned for you. My Freetails left and have not returned. I still have some 61 total little browns, flying pups, and some adults that were born here but many left and have not returned. We have experienced some very hot and stormy weather this year which may have contributed to their departure.

I am not sure where you are from but if you don't have purple martins now you won't have them this year. There are some parts of the northern breeding range that still have some martins that have not migrated back south yet but all are done breeding by this time of year. They arrive in south Texas and Florida at the very end of December and early January. They arrive in the middle of the country around April-June and into Canada they arrive May-July. Some places might still get a visitor from time to time that is migrating from the north back to the south but they have already done their breeding this year.
