Bats hanging out last summer

These bats in an unventilated house also got too hot last summer. All three of my bat houses had bats on the landing board during daylight due to getting too hot. This included the normal ventilation schemes with slots in the sides and front. This one shows the strings hanging loose where the screening has come apart.
I recently repaired this house and relocated it for the bats to consider in late March or early April 2011.

Nice picture Frank! I've had my big browns hanging low on hot days.........I've got much better ventilation on my boxes now........Using one inch boards as baffles I just gap them in back and it makes for lots of ventilation on the shady side of the box......also allows for more entrance/exit points which the bats seem to love!

Nice photo Frank..

Terry,

You say gap them in the back.... Do you mean a vent to the outside?

I just built 6 and put 1 1/2 holes in each upper corner of all the dividers.

This photo kinda shows them. Drill is located on the right side and you can see hole on the left? They can move between dividers, but there are no vent holes at or near the top?

These are going in NW Ga and the buyer selected the color. They have the front 1/2 vent and side vents per BCI guidelines.
I am concernted that they be too dark.

Those are nice looking bat houses!

I have attached a link with pictures of how I gapped the one inch boards for access and ventilation in back. The interior baffles also are gapped at at least one place to allow for internal movement between baffles.

I have also drilled 1 & 1/2 holes for internal access like you have shown in your pictures. I always put internal access gaps in the lower part of the box so the top parts of the crevices maintain different temperatures.....

Nice to see bats again even if they are from last summer  Also nice to see activity on this forum again. It was getting much too quite!

po boy, they look to be about the right shade of dark for this region based on every thing I have read. Coincidentally that is close to the color of *our* house. (The people house that we were sharing with the bats last year  ) However, if all six of yours are going to the same area, I would have painted one even darker and two lighter so the bats would have a choice.

Oh, waiting on scheduling to find me a bit of room to run my mold at work. Hope to have something to show for my months of work in the next few days.
