Bat House Forum

We have had two rather nice days but cool with temps in the mid 50s and nights in the mid 30s. I checked the bat houses tonight around 11:30 PM and there were three bats in the large house and one big brown in the unventilated house.
The bats in the large house were very small not little browns. I have no idea what they are. They stay at the top of the baffles on a horizontal board I put at the top when I built the box several years ago. This box as all my boxes has a ceiling plus a roof and I suppose it traps a little heat up top. The bats this late in December have taken me by surprise. I did not try to get a photo as I don't want them to use any extra energy. It is 37 degrees right now at 12:02 AM. I thought I would pass along word of my good fortune.

In north Georgia we had a bat flying around our garage last night. I did not witness this so can not even begin to id species, however I was told it stayed there for quite awhile. Flew around, landed, flew...it was pouring out. I completely did not expect to see a bat this time of year! Will have to check the bat house today and see if by some chance it's staying in there.
