BATS COOLING IT IN DAYTIME

Postby cloudman75 » Sun Apr 24, 2011 1:50 am

PHOTOs OF ANOTHER BAT HOUSE OF MINE FROM LAST SUMMER WHICH I THOUGHT SOME MAY LIKE TO VIEW.
This prompted me to add more ventilation in the new summer houses I built for 2011 I checked this house tonight and thought the bats would never cease to fly out. It is full I think, but did not count them. It has no ventilation and is used until it gets too hot for the bats usually around July or August

Nice pictures Frank! I have had my big browns hanging low like that but never my little browns........

Years ago before I had so many bat boxes and different ventilation options, I had a few big browns actually fly out in mid-day because of the heat.........

In recent years I've found that if I make the back crevice (shady side) with plenty of ventilation both big and little browns love it.......they also seem to like to enter and exit from the ventilation slots.........

Terry, I put two vents in front and back on my summer house all the way across about 3/4 inches wide. The bats can enter there if they want. In addition the roof is suspended above the front and back to give a crack across the house for air to escape This will provide a chimney effect and a breeze when it gets hot. The roof was made really large to shield the house from sun and sides and roof painted white. We will see how it does in hot weather. I have only one little bat using it so far.
Here is a photo of my ventilated roof which I have not seen anyone else do on the forum. You can see the daylight at the top under the roof. This is an experiment and I can always modify the house if I get no tennants.

That design should work real well for extremely hot weather!

Great shots. Yes, I put up a picture tonight. My house is packed!!! We had bad winds/storms come thru NW La last night. All house managed to stay up , but no way to go out there! That looks like some really big bats..I think I may add ventilation to this house also...Randy
