Bat Rescue!

Postby Dave Miller » Tue Oct 06, 2009 12:51 am

Today when I got to work I was walking around and I saw this little brown lump on the floor next to the wall in a hallway. At first I thought it was a dead mouse, but when I got close to it, it turned its head and squawked at me - a little brown bat! I carefully scooped it up in a paper towel and took it out to my pickup, where I put it in the back which is covered with a canopy. I partially covered it with a small towel and went back inside. I brought out a small lid with some water in it and placed the water next to the towel. A few hours later I brought out a box to place it in, but by that time it had flown or climbed up onto the carpeted wall of the canopy, and was fast asleep. By the end of the day it was still hanging there, so I carefully drove home and took some pictures:

With my thumbnail for scale - the bat is quite small!

I took some video as well, which shows it really close up. I'll post that later.

I left my truck outside and opened the back, and put the lid of water below the bat on the box so it can climb down to drink. Hopefully it will wake up and fly off tonight. As of 8:30 PM it was still there so maybe it is exhausted from its experience inside the building? Or maybe it is just too cold to be active. Or maybe it is sick . If it is still there in the morning I'll put it in the box so it doesn't have to ride around with me

This is the closest I have gotten to a live bat, it is great to be able to see one up close!

Well it was still there this morning so I moved it into a box with some rags hanging along the sides, and put the box up on our tree house deck. I put the lid on partway, in case a cat or something goes up there (which is rare). Also replaced the water. It got down to around 40 last night (65 during the day) so I'm thinking it is just in a state of torpor (or diapause? I'm not sure of the difference). When I moved it into the box it did voice its displeasure, although weakly. So it is still alive. If it is still in the box tomorrow I think I'll move it into my bat house, which is about 40 feet from the tree house.

It may be really hungry and too weak to search for food. Do you have a pet store nearby where you could buy some mealworms or crickets - and try feeding it?

Yes, I think that may be true also. I will get some mealworms today. I don't think this little girl/guy could eat crickets, it is barely bigger than a cricket!

I didn't have a chance to see if it was still in the box this morning but I will check tonight. If it's gone I'll just give the mealworms to the birds.

It would be neat if you get to feed it!

Well the bat was still in the box last night so I broke open some rotten logs and presented it with a few larvae and tried to get it to drink some water from a wet q-tip. I think it may have eaten a tiny millipede larva (I had to run in the house for a bit, the millipede was gone when I got back), but it was not interested in a larger (3/8") larvae. In fact the bat seemed perturbed that this thing was squirming around in its face.

I moved the box into the tree house and left a window open, since the temp. is more stable inside. But I have a feeling the bat will be in the same place tonight. I am getting more worried about this little girl/guy.
