bat houses placed near lights and bat house dimensions

Several factors when bat houses are placed near lights , 1- how thw lights are energized , some power supplies emit ultrasonic sound , 2 - if the surface beneath the bat houses reflect light up into the bat houses.

I have used a Pettersson Ultrasound Detector under lights and power lines , at some sites would receive ultrasonic frequencies above 25kHZ.

Several years ago I used to correspond with the Bat Conservation Trust in the UK and also bat people in the Yorkshire area. Their reasoning for the smaller houses in Europe was because of the smaller sized bat colonies in Europe.

One last thing still very much interested in any bat info of large bat colonies over 1000 bats species big brown , little brown or northern long-eared in buildings. Information I am interested in is degree slant or pitch of roof , shingle material on roof ie- cedar , asphalt shingles , tin or clay tile , where bats are roosting ie- near ends , middle or if the colony moves around in the building during the day. If building is ventilated and how ie- dormers with slanted wood baffles ,cupaloes on roof, metal vents in the ends and on the overhanging roof . or a ridge vent.

Prefer info from buildings that do not contain OSB or MDF wood

Will pay for the info , location or pictures usually $50 -$75 , also If you would observe the colony in hot weather to see what part of the building bats are using or moving to will pay $100 for 2 observations .

This info will be used for my own use in designing large bat houses and NOT TO SELLfor profit.send me a pm e-mail to this forum

In Europe different sp of bat emerge and finally return at different times, often with visits to nother roosts, pipstrelle sp will ((normally) whats normall to bats?)) emerge at or just before dusk whilst plecotus & myotis will emerge well after dark, the plecotus sp will tuck themselves away with light levels above 2 lux, below this and they are sometimes found tucked into a corner.

I have also noted that the new energy saving or older fluresent lighting emmit ultrasonic sound, having said that pest control devices that are suposed to upset rodents do not appear to effect bats (maybe/maybe not) as bats prefer their chosen roost, which may have been used for years, they may put up with the noise with effects that we will not ever understand.

Boxes in Europe are being used by larger numbers of bats (see Erik's posts) also in parts of the UK, we (in the UK) seem to have a problem communicating, especially with sucsessful projects, this is a great shame, I have recently heard of a bat box with 300 + bats in use for over 10 years, this is an American style box (as I prefer to know them), they are also successful in Portugal, the Netherlands and other areas of Europe. I think you will find the bat workers in the UK are now open to all posibilities although occasionaly I still get told the old square box is the one & only batbox. Gosh I think I will get burnt as a witch if I carry on, BUT I do want to see more communication over in the UK.

Well done re your offers in the name of science and ecology for the sake of the bats I wish there were more people thinking as you are-for the bats!

Budz, the detectors can be found here and are built like a swiss watch. http://www.batsound.com/

For comparison their D 200 model (second cheapest) is $305.76 $USD
