One bat in east house on 6/9/11:

I'm pretty sure that this is the same bat that was in the west house last month, because it was in the exact same position as it was in the west house last month.

Note that this house is mounted to a live tree, which has a long section of trunk with no branches. So while it is generally a bad idea to mount a bat house on a live tree, this shows that in certain circumstances bats will use a house mounted to a live tree.

Here you can see a bit more of the tree:

I was having a terrible time getting the focus right, apparently the bat got fed up with me and crawled into the attic space. This photo was taken 3 minutes after the one above.

1 bat in each house today. The low numbers are kind of frustrating. But I am thankful for the ones that I have.

West house:

East house. Note that the bat must have been annoyed, it moved around a bit while I was taking pictures.

Note that the bat apparently has no trouble hanging on to the rough side of the slate.

First bats of the year yesterday. This is the earliest I have seen them. One bat in each house.

Great pictures! Is it just the light, or are the two bats different species? If not, that is not very sociable of them to pick separate houses.

I think they are both little browns. It does seem like they prefer to roost separately. But the houses are about 200 yards apart so maybe they just have different preferences? The snag that the west house is mounted on is rotting fast, I'll probably need to move it this winter.
