Bat house sways in high winds - will it keep bats away

Postby mattkime4 » Mon Mar 16, 2009 11:56 pm

I have a bat house installed in my backyard in brooklyn. i'm quite satisfied with it except that the house itself will sway a foot or two in heavy wind. i'm confident that the pole itself is structurally fine as its survived some very high winds without trouble. my concern is for the bats. will it keep them away?

My bat house sways in high winds and it has not kept the bats away. I do not have high winds often, but I
live in Georgia and we have a few wind storms every year in Spring, summer and fall. Once they start using the house, I think they will put up with some sway in high winds. I guess it would depend on how high and how often.
Your house looks great and looks about 20 ft high so if bats need a home in your area you will probably have some using the house. I am not an authority on bats, just speaking from my own experience. Did you build your house and how many chambers? Good luck.

Thanks for the reassurance!

I ordered my bat house but finishing and installation left most of the work on my shoulders. It has three chambers.

Its located in brooklyn. Hopefully i can provide a home for some urban bats.

Matt, good luck with occupancy. I realize you have tight confines there for viewing but have you ever seen or had neighbors see bats foraging?

we're fairly certain we've seen bats from our yard. there's always more nature in brooklyn than people would expect.
