Pleas help!  I had a bat flying around my kitchen with the lights on in the middle of the day.  I have been home all day and did not see it.  Ii went into my basement for about five minutes and thats the only possible explanation I have for it getting in my house. A few questions?

Is it normal for a bat to be flying in a house in the middle of the day?

Do they live in packs or groups? What are some clues to where they are living?

I have two small children and don't want to have to worry about any more getting in the house.

I live in Illinois near Chicago, If that helps with my question.:(

They explore more this time of year and consequently sometimes end up in people's homes. Many times in hot humid weather they find their way inside looking for a cooler place to roost.

If you open your doors and windows they will just fly out.

The bat you had was probably a bachelor (male) and they roost alone. Female's will roost together in colonies

Clues on their entry/exit points are staining below crevices in your siding or roof. Their droppings (guano) accumulating on the ground below an entry/exit point is also a sign.

Here is a link to bat conservation international's website with good info on excluding them from your home that will hopefully answer all your questions.
