Bat house color and location - Savannah, GA

Bat Houses Bat House Discussion!

Postby exsailor66 » Wed May 30, 2007 10:23 am

Hi,

I am new at this and don't want to make unnecessary mistakes, so I bow to your expertise.

I have a new bathouse and I would like to have suggestions about what color I should paint it, and where to mount it. I have read that lighter colors are better in the south, but want suggestions on what color. Here in Savannah, we have some very hot days in summer, and it hovers from just above feezing to 60/65 in winter.

Also, I was thinking of mounting it on one of our two chimneys (fireplaces not operable). That way, I can orient it any in any direction (NSEW). Which direction do you suggest. I also have a few options on mounting it on either the east-facing or north-facing side of the house, under  the eaves.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Welcome aboard!

Check out the bat house guidelines on BCI's page, at http://www.batcon.org/home/index.asp?idPage=47

Near the bottom of that page, you'll find a document for "Criteria for Successful Bat Huses".

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forum. Your not to far from me. I've had some limited success with a rocket style box painted a light-medium brown. http://home.comcast.net/~mh701/wsb/html/view.cgi-photos.html-.html

The rocket that I'm talking about is the last set of pics on that link.

I would face it in an easterly direction.
